Q. What does AshaKiran do? What is AshaKiran?

A. AshaKiran is a nonprofit organization offering crisis services to individuals impacted by domestic violence, sexual assault, and human trafficking. While we serve anyone in need, we specialize in supporting foreign-born populations by providing culturally and linguistically specific services. In addition to direct support, we educate and train service providers and community members to raise awareness about the victimization we address and the critical intersection of culture and language in supporting survivors.

Q. What does AshaKiran mean?

A. It means “A Ray of Hope” in Hindi. And that is exactly what we aim to do – we want to be a ray of hope in our clients and community’s lives!

Q. What is unique about AshaKiran’s approach?

A. AshaKiran provides culturally sensitive and linguistically appropriate services. We believe in acknowledging all cultures and addressing challenges with cultural humility and awareness.

Q. What kinds of services does AshaKiran offer?

A. We provide comprehensive direct services to individuals affected by domestic violence, sexual assault, and human trafficking. Our support includes shelter, counseling, case management, transportation, advocacy, and language assistance through interpreters and translation services. Our dedicated team of social workers and case managers works closely with clients to support their healing journey, helping them transition to a safe and healthy environment and achieve their personal goals.

Q. Who does AshaKiran serve?

A. We serve anyone who has faced domestic violence, sexual assault, and human trafficking. However, we do specialize in supporting individuals from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds, and underserved communities.

Q. What ages do you serve?

A. Clients must be 19 years or older.

Q. Who can stay in your shelter?

A. Our shelter houses (cis)gender women 19 years or older. We always aim to keep families together, so children can also stay in the shelter. If a male child is 13 years or older, the family automatically goes into our non-residential program and receives all of the same support services as our residential clients. Currently, there are no time restraints on how long clients may remain in our programs.

Q. Who does your crisis line help?

A. Our 24/7 crisis line is available in over 45 languages, offering support and services for individuals affected by domestic violence, sexual assault, and human trafficking. Callers can reach out for immediate assistance or to access resources, even if they do not require urgent help.

Q. Does AshaKiran provide education and training?
A. Yes, we offer awareness and training programs for individuals and organizations, focusing on topics like cultural humility, language access, domestic violence, sexual assault, human trafficking, working with foreign born communities, and more.

A. Absolutely! We collaborate with community partners, law enforcement, healthcare providers, and others to build a network of support and understanding for diverse populations.
